File Under: Bye, Bye Fairpoint

I am glad to say that I have kicked Fairpoint to the curb. Time Warner came today and installed ye olde Roadrunner. It's faster, but not on everything. There's still traffic issues on sites like Facebook, but overall, it's faster. The speed also seems more consistent, which was ulitmately the reason I dumped Fairpoint. I didn't really need a lot more top end, but the intermittent speed drops were really pissing me off.

I was going to be scathing when I called to cancel, but the poor lady sounded depressed enough as it was, poor thing.

File Under: Hacienda "She's Got a Hold On Me"

I came across this on This is Somewhere. This song makes me want to tool around with the top down, which I would totally do if I had a convertible and there wasn't still snow on the ground.

Yeah, I know, another post about David Ford. I can't help it, I've been following his videos around YouTube this morning and they're so good, I just have to share.

File Under: Dumb Ass Kids

So seven teenagers got busted for drinking at the Drama Festival last week in Rockland. I remember when the drama kids were the smart ones. What the heck, don't they know that drinking is for the cast party, not at the flippin school, where you are performing? Who thinks it's a good idea to get drunk around a bunch of parents and teachers? Morons that's who. The quality of intellect in today's kids is just not there, when they can't pull off a simple underage drinking concept. I truly fear for the future of humanity. I'm also glad it wasn't PIHS kids and a litle bit pleased it was Cape Elizabeth kids. My Maine reader will know why.

User Friendly is definitely a geek's comic. This is their Sunday comic/crossword, honoring the finale of the amazing series. I'm still working on 17 across. I'll get it, even if I have to watch all the original Battlestar episodes.

File Under: Emotional Moments

It's funny how emotions can over take you with out warning. I was just upstairs with the family, they were reading while I practiced guitar. Addy had dragged my old bear, Max, onto the bed.

Max is one of those fabulous big ol Gund Honeybears. He literally hugs you back and was the last stuffed toy of my youth. Admittedly, I was a little old when I got him, but to this day, I won't turn down a good stuffed bear as a gift.

Since I was tired, I decided to lay down for a minute and snuggle my old bear. As I lay there hugging Max, I had a strong memory of the day I got him. My Mom and Gram took me with them to a gift shop in Caribou. While looking around I found Max; Gram decided I should have him, so she bought him for me, as a present (birthday, maybe).

My gram passed a couple years ago, and that memory triggered a rush of emotion. I started sobbing like I hadn't done since she died. My son, who was lying near, saw the tears and asked if I was alright. I told him through sobs that I missed his GG (great-grammy). That little man leaned in, hugged me tight, kissed my cheek and told me he loved me. Which made me cry harder, but was exactly what my heart neeeded. I'm so lucky to have such a great kid, my Gram would be proud.

File Under: A sad day for my ears

It truly is a time of change. It was officially announced that last night that Mr. Bryan Dondero, the exceptional bassist for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals has decided to part ways with the band. I've been lucky and gotten know this unassuming, multi-talented man a little bit. I know in my heart that he didn't come to this decision lightly or with out all the right reasons. Don't think for one moment that his endeavors won't still be featured here (if he shares them that is). All that said, my ears will greatly miss his musical prowess as the down low roots to that glorious tree called Grace Potter and the Nocturals.

Mr. Bryan Dondero has added a music page to his blog. He has listed the albums he's worked and has include some of the songs in players. As always it's interesting to read Bryan's stuff. The last track on the page is an unmastered cut from his upcoming self-titled EP "Shore." Check it out.

File Under: SCHOOL -- 1957 vs.. 2008

This email circulated into my inbox. I'm sharing it with you cause it does seem that somehow things have gone off the rails.

Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2008 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2008 - Police called and SWAT team arrives. They arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged them with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2008 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie.. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock
2008 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 5:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2008 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 6:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2008 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 7:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

File Under: Filet O Fish ad hits on all cylinders

It's a lesser known fact that I studied marketing in my college years, and in fact have a degree in advertising. As such, I generally avoid ads and deride many as just plain awful. There are some ads that tickle my fancy, ie. the butt dialing spot, but it's not a stellar ad, cause most people probably couldn't tell you who it's for.

That said, McDonald's is currently running one of the strongest ads, I have seen in a long time. It has a great jingle that gets inside your brain and won't leave, and there is no mistaking what the product is. It's very well acted, the heavy guy bouncing to the beat while munching his Filet-O-Fish, completely sells it. I'm sitting here, right now at 8 am thinking I might want that damn fish sandwich. The ad has also gone viral, it's been uploaded by multiple users on YouTube, and the teenagers are actually talking about it, they love it (per teachers I know). This may be one of those ads that defines that younger generation. Their "Where's the beef?" So despite McD's being a competitor, I say bravo to your Tivo stopping, jingle singing spot.

File Under: From this kayaker to the state of Maine..

F#$% YOU! It seems that some of those genius legislators down Augusta way want to liscence every kayak and canoe operator over the age of 16. Are you f'n kidding me? We choose the least impacting way to enjoy Maine's waterways and now you want to punish us for that? Kiss my ass you overtaxing, money grubbing self agrandizing assholes. I have f'n had it with this state. Every time I turn around they're trying to clip me for another thing. I can't wait for them to tax the air I breathe. I believe in conservation, I have the f'n Loon Plates, I pick up trash when I see it. If I hump it up the hill, I hump it back down. That's the way you do it, but this is just ridiculous. You got the money on my f'n kayaks when I bought them. Take that 5% and conserve something you greedy f#$%s.

File Under: In case you don't have cool friends, like I do...

who tell you about cool stuff, you should know that Phish is allowing their fans to legally download their new live shows the day after they happen. This is a brilliant move. What a way to reengage their fan base and give accessibility to new fans. The free files are MP3's, they have a pay option for the audiophiles who want better sound.

I thought GPN was cool for allowing tapers, but this is Fonzi (pre-shark) cool.
