File Under: If you're going to vote yes on 1, what is it you truely fear.

As I've stated before, I fundamentally don't understand why anyone cares if two adults want to marry, regardless of their gender. It's none of my business, so why should be any of theirs? What are they truly afraid of? Here's a couple of articles about this mess in Maine, one draws an interesting parallel to race issues and the other is mostly informative.

File Under: Tax initiatives bad for Maine

I would love to have more money in my pocket, however Question 2 and Question 4 on Maine's November ballot are just not gonna help us. As much as I despise the idiots running this state, it's representative government, which is the foundation of our country, should not be subverted in such a fashion. If you don't like the way things are going in your state or municipal government, petition your elected official, elect someone else, or run for office. That's the point! Don't put in place sweeping automatic laws that will require an act of God to undo.

File Under: Am I Builder

Am I a Builder or a Wrecker
Anonymous

I watched them tearing a building down,

A gang of men in a busy town.

With a heave and a ho and a might yell,

They swung a crane and a sidewall fell.

I asked the foreman, “Are these men as skilled

As the men you hire when you have to build?”

He gave me a laugh and said, “No, indeed!

Just common labor is all I need.

I can easily wreck in a day or two

What builders have taken a year to do.

And I thought to myself as I went my way,

Which of these roles have I tried to play?

Am I a builder who works with care,

Measuring life with a ruler and square?

Am I shaping my deeds by a well-laid plan,

Patiently doing the best I can?

Or am I a wrecker who walks the town,

Content with the labor of tearing down?

File Under: This is gonna get messy

This BDN article is one of many things to come in the next month as both sides of Question 1 appeal to Mainers to vote their way. I fundamentally don't understand why any one cares if same sex couples get married. It doesn't have anything to do with me, it's none of my business. No one is going to force me to marry a dude, so why should I care if two consenting adults want to screw up their relationship by getting married?

I'm also intrigued by the concept of protecting the "sanctity of marriage." Sancitity as defined by Merriam-Webster:
1 : holiness of life and character : godliness
2 a : the quality or state of being holy or sacred : inviolability b plural : sacred objects, obligations, or rights

That seems to all relate to religion, not something that has any place in our civil law. Lest we forget that seperation of church and state protects us both ways.

File Under: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Waterfront

A great night of music. The new line up is dynamic. Benny Yurco and Catherine Popper make fine additions. I would by lying if I said I didn't miss Bryan though. This is not a knock on Cat as she is an amazing bassist, I was just so use to his grooves and flourishes and notice when they aren't there.

This fine evening culminated in back stage passes courtesy of a band members mother. I can tell you she is a wicked nice woman to begin with, but giving me her pass was way above the usual niceties. I can't thank her enough. Got a chance to talk to all the usual characters backstage and meet a couple of online friends in the flesh. It was quite an experience. Then we went to Nectar's to catch up with the rest of the Posse.

What a fun night. Wilco was f'n great! They played a couple songs off of Mermaid Avenue, which made me so happy.

My good friend Jodi was working the show and the band was cool and let her come out and watch with us. My Blues and Lasers tee caught the attention of a couple of folks from Burlington, always a smaller world than we think. Mom thought she saw Jen Crowell, I thought she was nuts, until Jodi started talking about a lady talking about GPN and her own work.

"What's her name?"

"Jen."

"Crowell?"

"I don't know, let me check." Enter modern technology..."Yep."

Small world indeed.

FIle Under: Life and lawns

It struck me (no it didn't hurt) while I was mowing my lawn this morning, that life is kind of like mowing with a push mower. It's work and it seems like it will take forever. There's always obstacles in the way so you have to go around, or move it before you can continue. You look up from your path and you see it's already half done (at his point the metaphor diverts a little, when you mow, you're happy to reach the halfway mark). Then with a certain sense of quickness, you arrive at the end.

Just like mowing lawns, life goes along easier with some really good music. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes helped me with my literal lawn this morning.

File Under: Working on that ticket to fly.

I know I haven't been a good little poster for the last week, but I've been a tad bit busy. Starting Wednesday morning, I have been working on finishing up my balloon pilot's license. We managed 6 flights, 5 free flights and 1 tethered. I'm exhausted, but I'm also thrilled, as I'm almost there. I learned some good lessons and did some cool things. My favorites were the Terminal Descents from 35oo and 6100 AGL (above ground level).

However, I've apparently hit a plateau regarding my approach to landing. I tend to over heat, which leads to aborted or rough landings. My instructor has no less goal than, me being able to land in a balloon sized opening in the woods, which is not forgiving on glide paths to approach. Therefore I need some more work and hope to have my license by COMBF.

File Under: My shoulders are pissed

Today I participated in the Aroostook River Kayak and Canoe Race. It was a slightly nicer day to paddle this year. The wind was gone, it was warmer and it only rained for the second half of the race. The crowd was smaller than last year, but just as enthusiastic. I started off well, passing a couple of the paddlers in front of me, but my shoulders started speaking up about 30 minutes down river. I must say I'm happy to have finished with a time of 1:22.16. I believe I finished well over 1:30 last year, something like 1:38, maybe? Which mean I may have improved my time by as much as 16 minutes. For me that is something to be happy about.

Matt finished in 1:16 and I think he would have been faster if he had a better kayak.

All in all, it was a good time, now I gotta rest my shoulders so they don't get too pissy.

"With The 'Gay Tax,' Love Doesn't Come Cheap" by Nancy Goldstein

If you want to know why I support homosexual marriages, it's quite simple. I can't look another human being in the eye and tell them that their love mean less than mine or that their heart aches any less when their love is gone. I just can't do it, therefore they should have the same rights regarding that love and heartache as me.

File Under: An Email from The Leaves

Hey all! Just wanted to let you know we'll be playing at the Monkey House this Saturday 05/02/09. We are very sorry to inform you that Matt Harpster, our lead guitar player, has fallen ill over this past week and will not be able to make it to the show. In an effort to fill in the huge void that Harpster leaves us with (seriously, we depend on him!), we are very pleased to announce that we have two special guests who will be gracing us with their presence this weekend. On lead guitar Bob Wagner will join The Leaves for a one time special appearance! And to help out, the lovely Jen Crowell will be singing for most of the evening on harmonies. Please come show your support for The Leaves and also for these two special guests who have been so kind to go out of their way and help us out in a time of need. I am very humbled by their willingness to help us on such short notice.

Jess Clemmons will be taking the stage at 9 pm.
This Frontier Needs Heroes will be playing at 10 pm
The Leaves will play at 11 pm and close out the night.

Also, just wanted to let everyone know that the CDs have SHIPPED! I just got a confirmation and tracking number today, so i will be tracking those boxes on a compulsive basis. Thank you to all who pre-bought the album, they will be out in the mail within two weeks. The extra digital recordings will be available (for those who prebought the album) shortly. Again, thank you, we could not have completed this album without your support.

Hope to see you all on Saturday - any support from you at the show will go a very long way!!!

Much love and best wishes,

Aya

p.s. please feel free to forward this to others if the shoe fits ;)

File Under: From Rorschach to Freddy Krueger

It seems that Jackie Earle Haley who brought the Watchmen's Rorschach convincingly to life, will be playing Freddy in the remake of the Horror Classic, Nightmare on Elm Street. I hope he has time to back out. I really don't think this movie is one that can benefit from a remake, especially when looking at the others involved in the project. I think JEH can do much better for his career, than this future piece of crap.

While I'm on the topic...Why the hell do they keep remaking these great horror movies? Here is a short list of recent remakes that didn't need to be made: The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left, and Friday the 13 (not that Nightmare comes even close to these). Theses films were amazing in the first place. Sure production value was low, they were on a shoe string, but that just added to the gritty nature of these films.

I can't even imagine a modern film getting the brutality of Last House on the Left past a rating board, without catching a NC-17. The original was horrific and disturbing, as it should be. It's not a movie you want to watch very often, unless you have issues. I haven't seen the new one, I probably won't, I bet it will be all about the blood and gore and somehow miss the commentary on humanity.

Ultimately, that's what these films were, commentarys about human nature. Don't forget that Friday the 13 was actually a tale of a mother's twisted sense of revenge. Romero's entire zombie series is about human failings. The living are always their own undoing. Without these parables, horror movies are just spectator murder and a much lessor form of the craft. To be clear, I haven't evaluated the remakes, but I can't imagine they carry the weight or the message of their originals.

File Under: Vevo, Universal Music's latest and greatest.

Read the Wired article here. This is the first response on the Digg page, makes me smile:

Demonbaby - "Wow guys, this is awesome! I've been looking for a new place to view music videos from all of my favorite UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP artists! It's exciting to me that I can finally be one hundred percent sure I'm sending revenue to the biggest, most out-of-touch dinosaur of a giant multi-national corporation when I watch music videos online! I'll even be helping the RIAA stay in business - those guys have been having some tough times lately, so they need our support! You know, sometimes I would find music videos on YouTube from my favorite UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP artists, but it appeared that they'd been uploaded ILLEGALLY by some fan trying to steal money from hard-working lawyers and executives! It made me feel dirty for watching videos that weren't provided to me officially by UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP - it felt like I was stealing! Thankfully all of that moral ambiguity will be gone now that VEVO is here! If history is any indication, all of my favorite UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP videos on VEVO will include all of the great features that I, the consumer, have come to expect from UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, like LOTS of cool advertisements during the videos, and a special feature that makes sure I can't repost the video on anyone other websites - that would be stealing!! Golly everyone I'm SO PSYCHED for this cool new website!"
